40 Things I Learned Doing 600 Podcasts

Come join us for our 600th podcast today at 10 a.m. EST!

1. Rule #1. Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt (Col. 4:6).

2. Rule #2. There are no exceptions to Rule #1.

3. Rule #3. Speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15).

4. Rule #4. There are no exceptions to Rule #3.

5. Rule #5. Use great plainness of speech (2 Cor. 3:12).

6. But there’s nothing unscriptural about having good clickbait.

7. As Mike often says, people don’t care about what you know until they know you care about them.

8. The gospel comes first. Then, your identification with Christ. That’s followed by right division. Just like the structure of Romans.

9. Keep the main thing the main thing. Don’t major on the minors.

10. Pushback is a good thing. Correction is a good thing. Love it. Embrace it. Thank people when they do that to you.

11. Living in a fishbowl is good for you. Keeps you honest and pure.

12. Tell personal stories about your wife at your own peril.

13. Re: Trolls – reject them after the second admonition (Tit. 3:10).

14. Some people have to be blocked. That happens. There’s nothing wrong with that. It’s Biblical (Rom. 16:17, 1 Tim. 6:2-5). But do all you can to try to get through to them and to be at peace with them before you block them. Love is longsuffering but it’s not forever-suffering.

15. Give as much room for grace as possible with unbelievers. Unbelievers are not Christians. Unbelievers are going to act like unbelievers. We’re not surprised by their behavior.

16. Err on the side of grace.

17. Someone will verbally attack you. It will happen. Be prepared to always respond with love and grace. That’s what it means to live the grace life. You’re going to be a class act even if you don’t feel like it.

18. Sometimes someone will attack you because they want to bring attention to themselves and maybe drive up their own subscriptions.

19. Sometimes it’s good to respond to them with love. Sometimes it’s good to ignore them. That’s your call. This is your podcast.

20. Attacks and controversies can be good for business, but don’t go looking for trouble.

21. If you’re not sure where they’re coming from, take ‘em to the cross.

22. If they have a “religious” background, take ‘em to the cross.

23. If you’re sure they’re unbelievers, take ‘em to the cross.

24. At the end of every podcast, take ‘em to the cross.

25. Ministry is about them. You are nothing more than a helper of their joy (2 Cor. 1:24).

26. You’re going to screw up. It’s going to happen. Be open about it.

27. Sometimes differing opinions on a Bible topic isn’t just about what is correct, but it’s also about the grace you exhibit while you’re having that public discourse.

28. Sometimes the best argument you can make is a simple question with a Bible verse.

29. Tone is everything when you’re sharing God’s Word.

30. Are you modeling every attribute of charity (1 Cor. 13)? Are you being a sincere example in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, and in purity (1 Tim. 4:12)?

31. It’s not enough to know about His grace. It’s not enough to talk about His grace. You’ve got to live that life of grace. Every. Single. Day.

32. If the egregious sin is public, then the correction should be public (1 Tim. 5:20), but that correction had better be a model example of Gal. 6:1.

33. Some people will depart from the faith teaching heresy. It’s okay to address this publicly. It’s okay to name names and suggest that those individuals should be marked and avoided (Rom. 16:17). But you’ll always mourn having to do that. You’ll always love them. Your prayer will always be that they come back to the sound doctrines of grace, and you will always be ready to welcome them back with open arms.

34. If Mike is having a good hair day, that usually means we’re having a good podcast. If Hal shows up early, he’s going to be on fire. If Fred doesn’t have a doctor’s appointment, wild horses couldn’t stop him from joining us. If Richard Jordan shows up, we’ll have over 50k views.

35. You know you have a phenomenal cohost sitting with you when he gets goosebumps every time he shares the gospel.

36. Validate and praise your cohosts and listeners.

37. Do your due diligence before you bring on that guest. Watch their videos. Read their articles and books. That’s your job.

38. Pray before and afterwards.

39. Ten viewers are just as important as ten thousand.

40. Numbers will go up, and numbers will go down. You keep on keepin’ on. That’s the Pauline way (2 Tim. 4:2-3).
