Mat 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.
Mat 16:22 Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.
Mat 16:23 But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
In Matthew 16, the Lord says something unto Peter which some could view as confusing. He says in verses 18-19 that He will “build” His Church upon Peter, and that He will give him “the keys of the kingdom of heaven.” But four verses later, he says, “Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.” What changed? What did Peter say that changed his ‘identity’ in the sight of the Lord between those four verses? Notice what Peter says in verse 22, “be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee.” The Lord said that Peter ‘savored’ the things that be of men, but Peter desired that the Lord would not “suffer many things,” and “be killed,” and “raised again the third day,” he loved the Lord, but he loved as this world loves, and even though Peter thought his intent was for the “Lord’s sake,” it was NOT according to the will of God, and the will of the Lord. He would later learn that suffering for the Lord’s sake means suffering according to His will, His plan and purpose, and this means, suffering in His place, as the Lord Himself would. This is godly thinking, not thinking as men, and Satan.
Mat 16:15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Mat 16:17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
Mat 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
Furthermore, the “things that be of God” concerns the Spiritual things found in His Word, the men of this world ‘savors’ the things that they can see, touch, hear, feel, and smell. And the Lord counted what Peter said as after the men of this world, and their thinking has a ‘father’ of it, and his name is the Devil himself; Satan. And in Luke chapter 4, Satan showed the Lord “all the kingdoms of the world,” and the “glory of them.” Satan ‘savors’ those things, and so does the man, Satan views those things as “power,” and this is because this is the ‘apple of the eye’ of men today.” Not many would ‘savor’ suffering for others and being killed for others; but this is how the Lord wanted His Apostles to think. They were taught that “greater love have no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” And they were going to be “hated” for His name’s sake, and He told them that, the men of this world will “kill” them for His name’s sake as well. The Lord gave unto Peter to know that, “he that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.”
Mat 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.
Mat 10:38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
Mat 10:39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
Mat 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
Moreover, Peter had more to learn concerning the “things that be of God,” the Apostles learned after the Lord’s death truly what those Spiritual things of God were. They knew that “yea, and all that will live godly, shall suffer persecution,” and suffering “for Christ’s sake” was the biggest element to the sufferings of Christ as His “Witnesses.” So, when the Lord heard Peter’s “rebuke,” and contrary thinking, He said unto Peter what He told the Devil himself, “get thee behind me, Satan.” But the Lord taught Peter ‘why’ He called him Satan, Peter thought as Satan concerning the Lord not fulfilling “all things that be of God.” And the Lord suffering, being killed is not what the Apostles wanted, they wanted their “friend” to ‘live,’ but they were ignorant of what the scriptures said concerning that “how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.” The believed on Him that He was the Redeemer, they were no longer “in Adam,” but they were as some of the Corinthian Saints, they were ignorant of what the resurrection was all about, as well as all of the “things that be of God.”
Luk 4:5 And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
Luk 4:6 And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.
Luk 4:7 If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
Luk 4:8 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
