Psa. 91:1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
Is this not a fascinating verse? “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” That’s amazing! Does this verse remind you of anything Paul wrote?
Psalm 91 is about how Moses, along with the other believers within the nation of Israel, can claim the Lord as their refuge and exist within the comfort and security of His protection.
Moses first says, “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High…” Where is this secret place? I’d suggest that secret place is the same hidden place where we exist, “hid with Christ in God,” because every saint is designed to be part of that same temple of the Lord at the end of Eph. 2.
Moses then adds “the shadow of the Almighty.” He’s saying that if you’re abiding IN the secret place, THEN you are also UNDER “the shadow of the Almighty.” Being IN the secret place is to also be UNDER “the shadow of the Almighty.” The Jewish believer who abides under the shadow of the Almighty, the protection of the Almighty, exists in His secret place.
How is it secret? It’s hidden in plain sight. Human eye cannot see this. Their lives under “the shadow of the Almighty” is a secret hidden in plain sight because this is a truth about their protection human eyes cannot see.
There is a similar but different principle that is also true for us. In Col. 3, after Paul talks about setting your affection on things above, he would write in Col. 3:3, “For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.”
First, how are we dead when we’re all still alive? That moment we believed in who Christ was and what He accomplished at Calvary, the Father gave us eternal life, which means that the moment we believed, we were all instantly baptized by the Holy Spirit, which means we all died, not literally, but we spiritually died with Christ. We were through the Spirit identified with His death, burial, and resurrection, which is how eternal life became a reality in us. We spiritually died with Christ, and we’re now risen with Christ, which makes us recipients of His eternal life, of His victory over sin and death that He accomplished on our behalf through His sacrifice at Calvary.
When Christ walked this Earth, He was visible to the human eyes, but now in Heaven, we cannot seen Him with our eyes. Thus, our eternal life hid with Christ in God is a reality that cannot be seen. And our identification with Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection is a reality that cannot be seen. And our membership the Body of Christ is a reality that cannot be seen. Our spiritual baptims is a reality that cannot be seen. Our spiritual circumcision made without hands is a reality that cannot be seen. Us becoming new creatures is a reality that cannot be seen. Our blessings in Christ, like having all spiritual blessings, is a reality that cannot be seen. And so now, as believers, we can only accept by faith the evidence of things not seen and walk by faith according to those truths, which means we’ll be hid in God until we appear with Christ in glory. And when we appear with Christ in glory, from that moment into eternity, our life in Him will no longer be hid.
So, Moses here in Psa. 91, speaking of himself on behalf of OT believers, the remnant of God’s people, shows us that their spiritual lives also existed in a secret place that is a reality that cannot be seen. And in that OT program, being in that secret place meant that they also abided in the shadow of the Almighty. The Lord became their refuge in the sufferings of this present life and their refuge from enemies. They now existed under the shadow of His protection from earthly threats and earthly trials. God became their protector and sustainer of life on this Earth.

Enjoyed that, thank you Joel.

Hi Joel, we love reading your messages, but why use ten words when you can use one? Is it possible for you to be a little more precise and brief in your writings? Less is often more. Writing is much different than preaching.
