Isaiah 55:1-3:
1 Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.
2 Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness.
3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.
Isaiah tells Israel, “Ho, everyone that thirsteth, come ye to the waters,” How? “Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live.” There’s life for our souls when we hear God’s Word! It does not cost to come and hear and find life! Verse 2 says, “Hearken diligently unto me.” We must like the Bereans of old, receive the word with all readiness of mind, and search the scriptures daily whether those things be so (Acts 17:11)!
We need eyes to see and ears to hear. A truth throughout God’s word. Dispensationally, for Israel, it’s the promises made unto the fathers, in the prophetic program, like the “sure mercies of David,” the blessings of the everlasting Davidic Covenant.
For us as members of the Body of Christ, it is the exceeding riches of his grace to us in Christ Jesus and the unsearchable riches of Christ for us Gentiles in this the dispensation of grace (Ephesians 3:1-12). These riches were a mystery, hid in God (3:9) until revealed to the apostle Paul. “Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my [the] knowledge in the mystery of Christ, which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men” (3:4,5). This is life, His life, the life of Christ Jesus, that is ours when we hear and believe the gospel of our salvation, trusting his work for us on the cross. That life is right there for us to “just come” and receive as a free gift by grace!
And then, “As ye have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him; Rooted and built up in him, and established in the faith.” We need to “just come” as the Bereans, and search the scriptures daily, and hear diligently the truth for us today! This is our food and drink for our souls!
