Understanding More in Titus 2

Who are the “aged women” referred to in Titus 2?

The most obvious answer is those who are older physically and have had a lifetime of opportunities to experience the stages of life: a child, youth, adolescence, middle age, and the older years. This gives occasion to apply sound doctrine in various roles, exper-iences, and challenges i.e. single-ness, dating, marriage, running a home, raising children, holding jobs, friendships, health issues in yourself and others, death of a loved one, etc.

However, it can refer to women who are spiritually mature in doctrine. They may not be grey headed, but have built up years in the doctrine, applying Scripture in many life situations. Titus 2 is likely to be referring to both.

Define what Titus 2:4 means when it says to be “sober?”

Older women have responsibility to “teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children.” These desire that “the word of God be not blasphemed.” (vs 4-5) To blas-pheme meansirreverent or inconsistent behavior or attitude.

To be ”sober” is not to be overcome or drunk with alcohol nor worldly doctrine.Women are to be clear headed, and maintain godly thinking, behavior, and decisions. Otherwise, it affects their reputation, impacting others, such as the ministry.

Romans 12:3 uses the term “soberly,” in a general warning as Paul instructs service: “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” Being sober-minded is a function of the measure or amount of sound doctrine in the inner man. Our responsibility is to yield unto it and then, walk it out by faith.
