We are to understand sound doctrine, be motivated by godly love, and separate from those causing discord: “Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.” (Rom. 16:17) This is not a license to be grace quality control inspectors, scrutinizing other saints in everything; this becomes legalism. Sadly, this is often seen at Church fellowships, on social media, and in interactions. In my early years of rightly dividing, (II Tim.2:15) this was me, though I was unaware and blind to it and its damaging effects; we need self-awareness. Saints who purposely cause division, and reject Truth, even though it was patiently explained many times, are to be marked and avoided, in love and with sadness, not anger or self-righteousness.
The Romans 16:17 admonition is not meant to be applied to anyone holding or expressing different views. The teaching is qualified by those who: cause division and offences, and “serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly…” (vs 18), deceiving others. No one believes exactly as another, if they truly think and study for themselves, and consider and prove new doctrine taught as a Berean. (Acts 17:11) We each have a unique journey with stepping stone experiences that can teach and help. Our choices may stumble or deter us and are affected by our diverse perspectives and struggles, along with holes and gaps in understanding.
Mercy with grace allows others liberty to proceed on their spiritual life journey according to their convictions and make mistakes to learn or even remain the same, with no condemnation. (Rom. 8:1) Grace is unmerited favor with freedom. It takes time and maturity to do well in our spiritual walk; mistakes are inevitable. If we’re honest, we all make them. Can we give others grace? As soon as we begin ministry (Romans 12), chapter 14 continues our training. It teaches application to stronger saints on how to function graciously with the weak (those who haven’t grown up to know they ought to set aside certain doctrines that are inconsistent with grace).
Ponder this: Are you a quality control inspector of yourself or others? Make a list of ways you can change this according to grace. Romans 7-8 & 12-14 teaches the believer how to avoid legalism and show charity to others in godly love and grace.
