John Sent His Disciples To Jesus, Did He Not Believe?

Luk 7:18  And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things.

Luk 7:19  And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

Luk 7:20  When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?

It is often thought, John the Baptist himself Sent his two disciples unto Jesus because John the Baptist doubted, or was in question if the Lord Jesus was the Christ, that would be the Savior of the world. And as we see in the verses below, there was a great fame about him throughout the land, and many begin to hear about all the great things that was being done of him in Judea in places roundabout. The disciples had heard that the signs of the Kingdom was being done by Jesus throughout all the land, this Jesus that was doing the signs that John prophesied about John sent his apostles unto him to ask this question that they wondered about. John was not in question at all, but it was his two disciples which had this question whether Jesus was the one that they were to look for. John preached unto them the Lamb of God which would take away the sin of the world, and he also preached about the Kingdom of God and the signs of that Kingdom. They were to look for that Christ in which John was going before him, and they knew that the Christ would shortly come, and they asked of John is this Jesus the one, or is it another that they ought to look for.

Luk 7:14  And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

Luk 7:15  And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

Luk 7:16  And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

Luk 7:17  And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.

Furthermore, John was not in question whether Jesus was the one that they ought to look for at all, John had said when Jesus came unto his baptism, “behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world” in John chapter one verse 29. And John the Baptist again goes on to confirm in John 1:36, when the verse says, “and looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!” As we see, it was not John that was in doubt or wondered whether it would be another that could come, but maybe this Jesus was a prophet, or a man similar to John’s baptism. But John knew exactly who he was, John’s whole ministry was dedicated to the ministry of the Lord’s Kingdom. John readied the nation for the Lord, John preached the baptism of repentance unto the people, and he also baptized them with water. Those that became saved after hearing the baptism of repentance concerning the Lord Jesus Christ, they became saved and justified unto eternal life by faith in him in whom they had not yet seen. And when John saw Jesus coming to his baptism, John could show the people that this is he in whom I speak of. He could tell them to behold the Lamb of God in whom he preached of, and in whom they believed that he too took away their sin and gave them redemption.

Luk 7:21  And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.

Luk 7:22  Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.

Luk 7:23  And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

Luk 7:24  And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?

Moreover, based upon John’s preaching, they knew the signs of the Kingdom, and they also knew that there was one that would come in whom John was preaching that they were to look for. What this meant, was that when they saw the Lord among them, they knew that scripture would be fulfilled as we see in Luke 7:16, “And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, that a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.” This is what John’s disciples wondered if this was coming to pass, and if this was the case, and Jesus was the one they were to look for, then it would have been of a certainty that God indeed “hath visited his people.” And the Lord himself preached unto the people as we see in the verses below, that John was preaching salvation by faith in the Redeemer, and those that would believe on the Lord, will be saved, but those that would not hear John the Baptist would be rejecting the counsel of God against themselves, because they rejected the preaching of John’s baptism of repentance.

Luk 7:25  But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts.

Luk 7:26  But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.

Luk 7:27  This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.

Luk 7:28  For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.

Luk 7:29  And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

Luk 7:30  But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.
