Many can tend to dismiss Romans 7 being unto the Body, to be doctrine to Israel. Why? Romans 7:1 says, “Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law.) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?” Below see why Romans 7 is highly important and to saints today.
1) Paul is our Apostle; this is his writings ‘to us’ the Body of Christ. All of it! “If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.” (I Cor. 14:37) Think on this.
2) Romans teaches one verse, one chapter building on the one before. Romans, 6-8, is teaching about Sanctification. Each of these three chapters is critical to understand the process of how to walk holy unto God. Chapter 7 teaches the pitfalls of the flesh i.e. Israel stumbled as they tried, in their efforts to keep a law. Our flesh will also fail if we don’t see this. Romans. 7 shows the end of the sin cycle…we often desire to do good, but do what we hate, because of the flesh. (Rom. 7:14-20) Paul also found this to be his default, who departed from grace, striving to keep the law. “For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me.” His spiritual life died, (unaccept-able fruit to God, which will burn), revealing the “wretched man.” (vs. 11. 24)
3) Let us think about the phrase: “to them that know the law.” Note that Paul has used the word “law” over 40 times in Romans, prior to chapter 7. At this point, ‘we’ should understand the law and how it works wrath with fruit unto death.
4) The term, “brethren,” in the context refers to saints in the Body, continuing to teach us as he has been in the entire book of Romans…unto Gentiles, all nations.
5) Romans 7 teaches that we will fail, if we do what Israel did: “For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteous-ness of God. (Rom. 10:3) We’re to live grace, letting the Spirit lead, not our fleshly works. It’s His power/wisdom as we dwell on the Word to acquire functional life; acceptable.
