The Old Man And The New Man

Col.3:9] Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;

[10] And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

As time goes by, we ‘grow older’ with it day by day, and as long as we ‘live,’ it is of “a certain’ that we will continue to grow older and older in our bodies. And just as that is of a truth, God desires that we know that we too should grow in our spiritual lives, and Paul tells the Colossian Saints that if they are “risen with Christ,” “seek those things which are above,” and “set their affections” upon the Spiritual things that be of God. Paul knows that they do not currently “seek” those things, he also knows that their affection is not currently “set” on those things while they are in the old man. But if they are now walking in a new life, they ought to now ‘think differently,’ and grow up as this new life goes on day by day. And that new life is a ‘risen together with Christ’ life.

Col.3:1] If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

[2] Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

[3] For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God.

[4] When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Therefore, we ought to understand and appreciate this “life” that we now have “with Him,” and it ought to be of ‘a certain’ that we too would grow in Christ, but instead of only just growing old, we are to grow in ‘a new.’ And we are to grow in the new man as Paul teaches us about our life together with Christ in our new “risen” life. And the “New man” ought to be “put on,” and this is done by our “renewed mind,” and when we became justified unto eternal life, God saved our inward man from the debt and penalty of sin against him, but God also made provision for the sanctified life that we will now live while here on the earth. Our inward man can be strengthened by the Power of His Word which is designed to work with effectually within us, and bring forth fruit unto holiness unto Him.

Eph.4:22] That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

[23] And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

[24] And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

 Moreover, being renewed in the spirit of our mind is putting on the new man, and casting off the old man with his deeds. As we seen in the verses above the new man is renewed by the Word of God, and he is renewed day by day by it, and just as we are expected to grow old day by day, we are also expected for “godliness sake’ to be renewed day by day as our new man ‘outgrows’ the outward man. And God has provided us with the ‘salvation’ from our old man with his deeds by His Word, and He is also made provision that not only are we to live as the new man, we are to be strengthened, whereby we can teach it unto others, and be an example by our walk in godliness and our life that we have in Christ as being risen together with Him and after the image of God our Father. And this is the only life we ought to know from here on out, the old things of the old man and his life ought to be forgotten, and cast off. And this is done by the renewing doctrine which is according to godliness working by the son who has put on the doctrine which is according to godliness.

Rom.12:1] I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

[2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

 Finally, we are taught by our Father to “cast off” our former life, our former thinking, and renew ourselves by casting off the old man with his deeds which are after the “works of darkness.” God our Father knows Satan’s “wiles” against the son, Satan wants the justified in Christ to continue to walk, and think, and live unto the “power of the air,” and not live unto God. But as we see in the verses below, it is God’s desire that we “put on” the Lord Jesus Christ, and walk in His Son, as “sons of God” by His Power over the power of darkness. And we “have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the Excellency the power may be of God and not us.” And we ought to “count” the knowledge of His Son, and the Life, and the selfless love of His Son as “treasure” that we are given by our Father. We are given these Spiritual things to put on, but oftentimes many will “oppose themselves,” and “denying the power thereof.”

Rom.13:12] The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

[13] Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.

[14] But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

  1. Putting Off the Old and Putting on the New

    Is Ephesians 4 commanding us to put off the old man and put on the new man? Verses 20-24 is one sentence and should be read in light of what’s been said before in verses 17-19. In verses 17-19 Paul tells us not to walk as the unsaved Gentiles because of what he tells us in verses 20-24. When these verses (20-24) are read as one sentence you will see the phrases “That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man” and “And that ye put on the new man” are not commands, but are past tense stating something that has already happened. This agrees with what Paul tells us in Colossians 3:9-10 and 2 Corinthians 5:17. The old man was put off and the new man was put on the moment you got saved.

    Ephesians 4 17. This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18. Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19. Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 20. But ye have not so learned Christ; 21. If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22. That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23. And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24. And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

    ………

    Colossians 3 9. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10. And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

    ………

    Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17)

    1. When the Apostle Paul says, “seeing that you have put off the old man with his deeds,” Paul is talking to those who are the “if ye be then risen with Christ.” Paul speaks to those who are the mature and the “if ye be risen with Christ” Saints. Paul speaks in this way many times in scripture, he says in Romans chapter 15, “we then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak,” not all Saints are the strong, but based upon the prior doctrine the Saints were taught in Romans 1-14, they ought be IF they received the edification.

      Paul is NOT referring to the Saint no longer being in Adam, but now they are a new creature at all. This “life” with Christ concerns sanctification unto holiness, and this should be plainly obvious based upon the words “seek,” “set,” “mortify,” “put on,” “put off,” and other words of exhortation given unto the Saints in Christ Jesus who have the desire to live unto God in godliness.

      Far too often, Christians only see the life that we have ad being justified unto eternal life, and the vocation life that we will have in Heavenly places, and conflict sanctification unto holiness doctrine with justification unto eternal life doctrine.

      The whole Ephesians epistle concerns the doctrine which is according to godliness, and how the Saint could live his Justified life in Christ unto godliness, or how he could be tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine “in Christ.”

      Not all Saints are going to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ,” and “cast off the works of darkness.” They could make provision for their flesh in Christ just as Romans 13:13-14 says, and they could also NOT be renewed in their minds in Christ Jesus. The “old man with his deeds” is NOT Adam, when we became saved by the gospel, the works of our flesh was not destroyed, nor was our carnal mind.

      Being a “living sacrifice,” and by the renewing of our minds, we can put on the new man.

      1. Those who are risen with Christ is not a reference to mature believers only. How would you even determine at what point of maturity a believer has to reach before being considered “being risen with Christ”?? You wouldn’t because Paul doesn’t say or teach any such thing!

        If you’re not risen with Christ, then you’re lost.

        Colossians 2 10. And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: 11. In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: 12. Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

        The old man is who you were before you got saved.

        The new man is who you were after you got saved and you are complete in Him.

        That doesn’t mean there isn’t a growing process in the life of the believer. The new man still has the flesh to contend with. The new man still has to live in fallen world system. The new man still has to renew his mind.

  2. The “Old Man” is not Adam. The unsaved man in Adam has no capacity to “put off” the debt and penalty of sin against him. He cannot “put off” his unjustified position in Adam. Justification unto eternal Life, and salvation from the debt and penalty of sin against him is obtained by grace through faith alone in Christ Jesus without works, or anything that the man thinks he could do to be justified in the sight of God.

    Colossians chapter 3 speaks to the mature Saints who desires to “seek those things which are above,” and also “set” his affection on things above as well. Paul is NOT saying, ‘well since your old man has been put off at the cross, seek the things which are above.’ Paul says that it is the saint that ‘puts on,’ and ‘puts off’ the new man and the old man. We are taught that we can cast off the works of darkness, and put on the armour of light. We are taught that we can put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make not provision for our flesh in Romans 13.

    Romans chapter 6 teaches the provision that we have been given to live our lives by His Grace and Power in our sanctification life. The does not HAVE TO “walk in newness of life,” he could “continue in sin” as verse 1 says. And Paul makes this clear by showing the provision we are given, and that we are “planted together,” with the purpose of walking in newness of His life, not unto ourselves and the body of sin. And we see Paul say “know ye not, ” and then, “knowing this,” because our walk ought to be consistent to the “likeness” of the One who has saved us, with the purpose that “the body of sin might be destroyed.” But unfortunately, not all Saints are going to “reckon” themselves to be dead indeed unto sin and alive unto God. And not all Saints are going to set their affections on things above, or mortify their members, and walk consistent with the doctrine of Colossians. Some Saints “in Christ” will be just content with being just Justified unto eternal life, and unfortunately “continue in sin.”

    Rom.6:3] Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?[4] Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.[5] For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:[6] Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.[7] For he that is dead is freed from sin.[8] Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:
